Your responsibilities for meeting the award conditions

You will receive our support to complete a Postgraduate Diploma in Specialist Teaching for two years:

If you are granted this study award, you must meet certain conditions. The specific terms and conditions will be listed in your letter of offer. In brief, you must:

  • enrol in the University of Canterbury's Postgraduate Diploma in Specialist Teaching: Deaf and Hearing
  • plan your study and workload for the year (we recommend that you do this with your employer)
  • arrange appropriate study leave with your employer
  • organise your own travel and accommodation for the block courses
  • email us at  specialedworkforce@education.govt.nz if any of the information you provided in your application changes – this includes your employment status, contact details and any changes to your proposed study.

You will receive:

course fees and we pay these straight to the them.

You will receive invoices from the university. Do not pay for the course fees, but do pay for all other costs.

Domestic tuition fees (course papers only).

In April, we pay your tuition feesuniversity sends an invoice directly to us for your university.

You are responsible for paying non-tuition fees. Please pay directly to the university.

Non-tuition fees such as building fees, student levies, building fees, administration fees and any other add-on university charges.

International tuition fees.

Travel and accommodation contribution (based on travel between school and study base).

We will pay this directlyPaid into your bank account. The exact amount and date will be written in your letter of offer if your application is successful.

Payment for block course one will be paid by 30 March each year.

Payment for block course 2 will be paid by 30 September each year.

Travel costs above the level of the travel and accommodation. accommodation. Shuttles, taxis or rental vehicles. Practicum travel expenses.

Contribution payment towards study leaveleave.

The maximum allowance is 50 days per year. This is based on studying 2 papers per year and full-time employment.

Note: If you work or study less, the payment will be proportional to your employment FTE and/orand the number of papers you are studying.

We pay this to your employer. Details will be included in your letter of offer if you are successful. We will also notifysend your employer a letter detailing how many days you will receive,to claim for the contribution amount and date of payment.study leave.

We will send you a letter of offer which will tell you how many days you will receive.

Any study leave taken over the amount you have been told you can use in your letter of offer.

Failure, withdrawal, breaks in study and changes to employment

If you...then..
Decide not to start the course after you have enrolled

withdraw as soon as possible.You must re-apply for a study award following year. Your study award will not be deferred for a year.

You will be liable for any fees charged by the university for withdrawing. If we have already paid your fees to the university, we will send you an invoice for the amount.

The university stipulates a 'withdrawal date', which is the final date that you can withdraw by without having to repay tuition fees. Find out from the university what the cut-off date is.

Fail a paperYou will need to re-take that paper at your own expense.
Withdraw from study part way through the qualificationYou will need to repay the Ministry any tuitionpay back all academic fees that we have paid onfor your behalf. Westudy.
Resign, are made redundant, your position is terminated or you decide to change jobs part way through your study

Contact us at  specialedworkforce@education.govt.nz , as we may be able to help you to continue study while you find new employment.

If you do not find appropriate employment in a suitable time period, your study award will sendstop and you an invoice forwill be asked to pay back all academic fees paid by the amount.

Your study award will not be deferred for a year. You must make a new application the following year if you want to study again.

The university stipulates a ‘withdrawal date’, which is the final date that you can withdraw by without having to repay tuition fees. Find out from the university what the cut-off date is.

Withdraw from study part way through the qualificationYou will need to pay back all tuition fees that we have paid for your study.
Need to take a break from study due to unforeseen circumstances

You will need to talk to us. You can ask for a study break of a maximum of one year. 

Resign, are made redundant, your position is terminated or you decide to change jobs part way through your study

Contact us as we may give you time to to continue studying while you find appropriate new employment.

If you do not find appropriate employment in a suitable time, your study award will stop and you will need to pay back all tuition fees that we have paid for your study

 Want to study one paper a year  

You are required to study two papers per year. In exceptional circumstances, you may be allowed to study one paper.

Need to take a break from study due to unforeseen circumstancesYou will need to contact us at  specialedworkforce@education.govt.nz and your university to discuss the break. The Study Award and Scholarship Advisor will decide whether to approve your request. You will agree to forfeit any future right to the award if you do not take up your study again within the agreed period. In this case, you will also need to pay back all academic fees that we have paid.
Want to study one paper a year

You are required to study 2 papers per year. In exceptional circumstances, you may be allowed to study one paper.

We will pay the study award contribution for travel and accommodation for your first 2 years. You will have to pay for any further years of study.
