Setting term dates for state and state-integrated schools
At the start of the year, schools may open on any day between Auckland Anniversary Day and 7 February, the day after Waitangi Day. At the end of the year, schools can close on any day up to the latest date, as long as they have been open for the required number of half-days during the year. Days schools must close
Under the Education Act 1989 state and state integrated schools must be closed on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays . State and state integrated schools must also close on Easter Tuesday. Partnership and private schools have greater legislative freedom than state and stage integrated schools so may decide to open on Easter Tuesday. Early childhood centres
These include kindergartens and playcentres and generally follow the same term and holiday dates as state schools. Full time daycare centres are usually open through the school holidays but close for a time over Christmas.
