A Community of Learning (CoL) is a regional group of education and training providers (early learning, schools, kura, and post-secondary) working together to help students achieve their full potential.
Each CoL sets shared goals, or achievement challenges based on the particular needs of the children and young people in that region. Once these have been endorsed by the Minister of Education, the CoL then works with the students, their parents, whānau, iwi and communities to achieve those challenges. CoL are a part of Government’s Investing in Educational Success (IES) initiative.
Benefits of joining a CoL
By collaborating and sharing expertise, CoL support students’ learning pathways and improve their transition through the education system. This approach also provides more opportunities for parents, families and whānau to be involved with their child’s learning.

Schools and/or kura within a CoL are funded to allow teachers time to work together on meeting the achievement challenges, drawing on each other’s skills, knowledge and experience.
Boards of Trustees choose whether their school/kura will join or form a CoL. Early learning and post secondary education providers can also voluntarily join a CoL.
