Wireless has been available as part of the School Network Upgrade Project (SNUP) since June 2013. In November 2014, the Associate Minister of Education Nikki Kaye announced a $5.4m initiative to retrofitOur wireless into schools and in April 2016 announced a further $9m to continue the rollout of this initiative.installation includes:

WSNUP focuses on schools with the oldest original SNUP upgrades. Over 820 schools upgraded before August 2012 will be offered the opportunity to receive a subsidised upgrade to their wireless network.

We acknowledge that a number of schools will not receive wireless equipment through this initiative. However, we will continue to monitor schools’ ongoing information and communications technology needs.

Check to see if your school is part of the WSNUP upgrade .

Timeframes for getting wireless through WSNUP

Upgrades typically take 1-4 weeks from when the installation starts to completion. This depends on the size of your school, and a number of other factors:

  • How quickly you returnan analysis of your schools’ current network switches and Wireless LAN (WLAN) system
  • an upgrade of the required documentsexisting WLAN system
  • a standards-compliant WLAN system including 5-year warranty and support
  • re-use of your existing structured cabling system
  • managed gigabit Ethernet switching replacement
  • provision of a training/network documentation manual.
  • The readiness of the school for the project
  • Availability of wireless contractors in your area.

The Wireless SNUP installation includes

  • An off-site analysis of your school’s current network switches and Wireless LAN (WLAN) System via the nominated project manager – Torque IP
  • A standards-compliant upgrade of your existing Wireless LAN System if required, including full warranty and support (e.g. firmware upgrades)
  • Re-use of existing Structured Cabling System to provide the fixed link for Wireless*
  • Managed Gigabit Ethernet switching replacement or re-licensing if required, covered by a full, next-day replacement warranty
  • Provision of a training and network documentation manual

*Cabling other than that required to connect to a wireless access point is not included as part of the scope of WSNUP. The project manager will discuss this with you on a case–by-case basis should it be required.

Our contribution only covers the standard upgrade. If you want other features like additional wireless access points or voice over internet protocols (VoIP) your school needs to pay any extra costs.
